Wig 911: How to Rescue a Tangled, Frizzy or Flat Wig at Home
We've all been there. You pull your favorite wig out of storage and it looks like it survived a hurricane. Don't panic — and definitely don't throw it away. TrendingWigs.Com has the emergency rescue guide you need.
Even the most well-loved wig can have a bad day. Tangles, frizz, flatness, and loss of shape are all common wig problems — and every single one of them is fixable at home with the right techniques. Consider this your wig emergency room. We're open 24/7.
🚨 Emergency 1: The Tangled Disaster
Symptoms: Knots, matting, fibers locked together in a seemingly hopeless tangle.
Cause: Friction (sleeping in your wig, storing it incorrectly), wind, or skipping detangling sessions.
The Rescue:
- Do NOT pull or yank. This is the number one mistake that turns a fixable tangle into permanent damage.
- Apply a generous amount of wig detangling spray or a diluted fabric softener solution (1 part fabric softener, 3 parts water in a spray bottle) to the tangled area.
- Let it sit for 2–3 minutes to soften the fibers.
- Starting at the very ends, use a wide-tooth comb to gently work through the tangle in small sections, moving upward toward the roots.
- Be patient. Work slowly. The tangle will release.
This technique works beautifully on long, wavy styles like our 13x3 Lace Front Long Wavy Wig in 24", where tangles can form at the ends if the wig isn't detangled regularly.
🚨 Emergency 2: The Frizz Explosion
Symptoms: Flyaways, puffiness, loss of smooth texture, the wig looks like it touched a static electricity machine.
Cause: Humidity, heat exposure, friction, or washing with the wrong products.
The Rescue:
- Lightly mist the wig with cool water or a wig-safe anti-frizz spray.
- Smooth the fibers downward with your hands, working from roots to ends.
- For stubborn frizz on synthetic wigs, try the steam method: hold the wig over a bowl of hot water (not touching the water) and let the steam gently relax the fibers. Then smooth immediately with your hands.
- Finish with a light application of wig shine serum, smoothed through the mid-lengths and ends.
Our Ombre Lace Front Long Wave Wig in 26" responds beautifully to the steam method — the waves re-define and the frizz disappears, leaving you with gorgeous, glossy texture.
🚨 Emergency 3: The Flat, Lifeless Wig
Symptoms: No volume, limp fibers, the wig looks deflated and sad.
Cause: Compression from storage, over-conditioning, or simply wearing the same style too long.
The Rescue:
- Place the wig on a wig stand and gently shake it out.
- Use your fingers to lift the roots and create volume at the crown.
- For synthetic wigs, try the cold water dip: briefly dip the wig in cool water, shake gently, and place on a stand to air dry. As it dries, the fibers will regain their original body and bounce.
- Once dry, flip the wig upside down and shake gently to maximize volume before wearing.
This works wonders on our Full Machine Made Long Wig in 26" — after the cold water dip and air dry, it comes back to life with incredible fullness and movement.
🚨 Emergency 4: The Lace Front That Won't Lay Flat
Symptoms: The lace at the hairline is lifting, bubbling, or not adhering properly.
Cause: Oils, sweat, or adhesive breakdown.
The Rescue:
- Gently clean the lace with a cotton ball dipped in isopropyl alcohol to remove any oil or adhesive residue.
- Allow the lace to dry completely.
- Apply a thin layer of wig-safe adhesive or double-sided wig tape to the lace.
- Press firmly along the hairline and hold for 30 seconds.
- For a no-glue option, use a wig grip band under the wig to keep the lace flat and secure without any adhesive.
Our 13x2 Lace Front Long Wave Wig in 26" features a beautifully constructed lace front that, with proper care, lays flat and natural every single time.
🚨 Emergency 5: The Wig That Lost Its Style
Symptoms: Curls have dropped, waves have straightened, the original style is gone.
Cause: Washing, humidity, or heat exposure.
The Rescue:
- For wavy/curly synthetic wigs: use the steam method (bowl of hot water) to re-activate the wave pattern. Scrunch the fibers upward while steaming, then allow to air dry without touching.
- For straight synthetic wigs: smooth the fibers downward with a wig brush while lightly misting with cool water. Allow to air dry flat on a stand.
- For heat-resistant wigs only: use a low-heat curling iron or flat iron to re-style. Always check the manufacturer's heat rating before applying any heat.
Our 13x3 Lace Front Mid-Length Straight Wig in 12" is easy to restore to its sleek, straight style with a simple cool-water smooth and air dry.
✨ Prevention Is the Best Medicine
- Store your wig on a stand, never stuffed in a bag.
- Detangle before and after every wear.
- Keep your wig away from direct heat sources.
- Wash every 10–15 wears with wig-specific products.
- Rotate between multiple wigs to reduce wear on any single piece.
